“Motivating boys to tune into a fictional story or nonfiction work is at the heart of the GUYS LISTEN project. For some, choosing to listen to an audiobook rather than flipping through book pages will be more interesting, more rewarding, and even more educational."–Rose Brock

Rose Brock is Media Library Specialist at Coppell Middle School West in Coppell, Texas. Her years of working in the learning environment have given her a special understanding of boys' needs. She works very closely with Jon Scieszka on GUYS READS efforts and has been one of the champion forces behind the launch of GUYS LISTEN.

Much has been written about boys and literacy, and national attention has been given to many studies where the findings confirm that young males lag behind their female counterparts in reading. In fact, eighth grade boys are 50% more likely to be held back than girls. Educators, librarians, researchers and parents are concerned about the future reading habits of our nation's boys. So is Jon Scieszka, National Ambassador of Literature for Young People. But instead of being intimidated by these statistics, Scieszka decided to do some research of his own. He went out and talked to boys. What did he discover? That boys do read but maybe not enough and not exactly what the teacher assigned.

GUYS READ and GUYS LISTEN are literacy programs encouraging boys to appreciate books and reading of all kinds. By embracing technology… encouraging choice…and expanding the traditional definition of reading you can help boys become self-motivated, lifelong readers.
